Over the years, we’ve met thousands of people at shows. At many of these events, customers come up to us and purchase a device. Once we hand them their purchase, we usually don’t hear much feedback. They register the device, mount it on a trailer, truck, car, or jet ski, and track it with the app or web portal.
Thankfully, most customers never have a need to follow their device for more than work or security purposes. But one user - we’ll call him “Ed” for anonymity - purchased a device to place on a car he owned. That car was driven by his wife, and… you can see where this was going.
Ed was happily married and had a son. However, things in their marriage weren’t adding up. His wife started taking more and more trips alone - to exotic, tropical locations like Cancún and Turks and Caicos. While his friends insisted she must be cheating, he brushed off the concerns, convinced she just needed time away from a stressful career and recent motherhood.
One day, while handing an iPad to his son to play with, an iMessage popped up on the screen from someone he didn’t recognize. He discovered that his wife had synced her iMessages to the iPad - so every time she texted, a copy landed there. Although the message itself seemed innocent, it finally made him realize that his friends’ suspicions might be true.
Ed is a tall, slender guy who loves to talk about his passions. When we first met him at a show, he told us about his business endeavors and his outspoken views on politics. He purchased the unit and went off to enjoy the rest of the event.
We do many shows throughout the year, and we see many familiar faces at different venues. It’s fascinating to meet people from in one state and again in another. Well, months later, we ran into Ed again - and he was eager to share his GPS-tracking story.
After getting the AlerTrax device, he placed it on his wife’s daily-driver car. He knew her normal commute - daycare, work, lunch, daycare, home. Pretty routine. But when her plans deviated - to visit “friends” without their son - his suspicions grew. He tracked the car to an upscale waterfront condo. Even after she parked in an underground garage, where many trackers lose GPS signal, his AlerTrax unit still reported its location thanks to built-in Wi-Fi.
In the end, Ed hired private detectives to follow her to that same garage and obtained photographic proof of the affair to support his divorce filing.
Without AlerTrax, he might still be “happily” married today. Ed still uses that same device for his work vehicles - and, while it wasn’t a happy ending, he says it was a worthwhile investment.
